Symetri was founded in 1989 by a group of engineers who wanted to enable people like themselves to work smarter. They set out to improve the industry through the use of the latest state-of-the-art technology and workflows, and Symetri has since grown into an international business with more than 1,000 employees and offices across Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland and the US. During this time, the company has also expanded its breadth of expertise into areas such as manufacturing/product design, facilities management, product development, data management and IT solutions, while leading the world in Building Information Modelling (BIM) consultancy.

One notable example of this is the expertise Symetri has provided at Heathrow Airport for more than two decades. Symetri has been engaged at a number of stages to deliver different requirements for architects, contractors and Heathrow itself as the airport has evolved to meet changing passenger demands and a need for substantial expansion. Symetri supported the Terminal 5 project which began in 2000 – an earlier BIM project – working on data collection, standardisation and management, and has supported further data/information management projects and standardisation ever since. Symetri assigned a dedicated BIM manager and co-ordinator on behalf of architects looking at current Heathrow expansion projects, to lead master planning and support the implementation and management of project design technology.
This passion for helping customers manage systems, projects and data more effectively has naturally evolved into supporting organisations with the creation and delivery of digital twins – virtual models designed to accurately reflect a physical object. As a result, sustainability and building safety are key factors in Symetri’s long-term strategy for the future, and the company offers specific consultancy to businesses looking to decarbonise their activities and improve their health and safety processes. Symetri has also taken steps to decarbonise its own work by, for instance, identifying the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that most relate to its business; partnering with One Click LCA (life cycle assessment) and developing Naviate Zero to calculate and reduce the environmental impacts of building, infrastructure and renovation projects; and taking steps to cut carbon emissions.
